Safety Information

Read and understand all instructions before use. Always wear appropriate PPE.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear chainsaw protective pants, safety helmet with face shield and hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed boots.
  2. Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders and pets at least 15 feet away. Ensure secure footing.
  3. Kickback Zone: Be aware of the upper quadrant of the guide bar tip. Do not let this part contact wood or other objects.
  4. Chain Brake: Test function before each use. Engage when carrying the saw more than a few steps or when not in immediate use.

WARNING! Improper use can cause serious or fatal injury. Never operate a chainsaw in a tree unless you are trained, equipped, and certified for aerial work.

Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble guide bar and chain.

  1. Attach Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar on studs. Loop chain over sprocket and onto bar groove, ensuring cutting teeth face forward on top. Install bar nut and tighten by hand.
  2. Fill Fuel Tank: Use fresh, high-quality gasoline mixed with STIHL 2-stroke engine oil at a 50:1 ratio. Shake container thoroughly before filling.
  3. Fill Chain Oil Tank: Use STIHL chain oil or a quality substitute. Do not use waste oil.
  4. Tension Chain: Pull tip of bar up. Using the combination wrench, turn tensioning screw clockwise until chain fits snugly against bar but can be pulled around by hand. Tighten bar nuts securely.

CAUTION! Fuel is highly flammable. Refuel in a well-ventilated area, with engine off and cool. Wipe up any spills immediately.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Master Control Lever: Combines stop switch, choke, and fast-idle functions. Throttle Trigger Lockout: Must be depressed before throttle can be engaged. Chain Brake Lever: Located forward of the front handle; engage manually by pushing forward or automatically by inertia. Decompression Valve: Reduces compression for easier starting.

Rear Handle Area: Contains throttle trigger, trigger lockout, and hand guard. Fuel & Oil Caps: Clearly marked. Muffler: Equipped with spark arrestor screen (check local regulations).

Starting & Stopping

Cold Start:

  1. Engage chain brake by pushing lever forward until it clicks.
  2. Press decompression valve (if equipped).
  3. Move Master Control Lever to choke position (full down).
  4. Place saw on firm ground, hold rear handle with right foot, grip front handle with left hand.
  5. Pull starter rope sharply until engine fires (usually 2-5 pulls).
  6. Immediately move Master Control Lever up to half-throttle (fast idle) position.
  7. Pull starter rope again to start engine. Saw will run at fast idle.
  8. Briefly blip throttle to disengage fast idle. Chain brake can now be disengaged.

Warm Start: Master Control Lever in half-throttle position. Do not use choke.

Stopping: Release throttle, allow engine to idle. Move Master Control Lever up to STOP position.

Operation & Cutting Techniques

Always use a firm, two-handed grip. Thumb wrapped under front handle.

  1. Basic Cutting: Let the chain do the work. Apply light downward pressure. Do not force the saw.
  2. Notching & Felling: For felling trees, make a notch cut and then a felling cut. Use wedges if necessary. Seek training for felling.
  3. Limbing: Cut branches from the bottom of the trunk upward. Use the underside of the bar to avoid pinching.
  4. Buckling: Support logs properly. Cut from the top down whenever possible. Be alert for tension and compression in the wood.
  5. Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip, do not overreach, do not cut with the tip, and be aware of wood tension.

WARNING! Never operate the saw above shoulder height. Be extremely cautious of reactive forces (kickback, pushback, pull-in).

Maintenance Schedule

TaskFrequencyNotes
Check chain tensionBefore each use, and frequently during useChain stretches when new
Clean air filterDaily or as neededTap clean; replace if damaged
Clean spark arrestor screenEvery 25 hoursLocated in muffler
Check/replace spark plugEvery 50-100 hoursGap: 0.5 mm (0.020 in)
Clean cooling finsWeekly in heavy usePrevents overheating
Inspect anti-vibration elementsEvery 100 hoursReplace if cracked or worn
Professional inspectionAnnually or per manufacturerHave dealer check carburetor, seals, etc.

Chain & Bar Care

Sharpening: Use a round file and file guide matching chain pitch. Maintain correct filing angle (typically 30°). File all cutters to equal length. Depth gauges must be filed down periodically with a flat file and gauge.

Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove regularly. Flip bar weekly for even wear. Check for wear, especially "burring" on the rails.

Lubrication: Ensure oiler is working. Chain should throw a fine line of oil. Adjust oil flow via screw if equipped.

Storage

Long-term Storage (over 30 days):

  1. Drain fuel tank and run engine until it stops to clear carburetor.
  2. Remove chain and bar, clean, and coat with oil.
  3. Clean entire saw.
  4. Store in a dry, dust-free place, out of reach of children.

CAUTION! Old fuel can gum up the carburetor. Always use fresh fuel mix or drain for storage.

Troubleshooting
