Safety Information

Read all instructions before use. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, sturdy footwear, and close-fitting clothing.
  2. Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders, children, and pets at least 50 feet away. Ensure secure footing.
  3. Kickback Awareness: Understand kickback causes; hold saw firmly with both hands; do not cut with the tip of the bar.
  4. Before Starting: Ensure chain is properly tensioned and sharp. Check for loose parts. Verify battery is fully charged and securely installed.
  5. During Operation: Do not overreach. Do not operate above shoulder height. Never operate when fatigued or under the influence.

WARNING! Chainsaws are dangerous tools. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.

Assembly & Initial Setup

Unpack all parts. Assembly requires attaching the guide bar and chain, and tensioning the chain.

  1. Install the Guide Bar and Chain: Place the chain over the bar, aligning drive links with bar groove. Fit the bar onto the saw's mounting studs, ensuring the chain fits around the drive sprocket.
  2. Tension the Chain: Use the tool-free tensioning knob. Turn clockwise to tighten until the chain snaps snugly against the bar's underside. The chain should pull freely by hand but not sag.
  3. Final Check: Tighten the bar retaining nuts. Pull the chain around the bar by hand to ensure smooth movement. Re-check tension after the first few minutes of operation.

CAUTION! Always wear heavy-duty gloves when handling the chain. Ensure the chainsaw is powered OFF and the battery is removed during assembly.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Main Controls: Trigger Switch (with safety lock), Chain Brake Lever, Battery Release Button, Oiler Adjustment (if equipped).

Front/Right Side: Guide Bar, Chain, Hand Guard, Chain Brake Lever, Bar Cover.
Left Side: Battery Compartment, Battery Release Button, Tensioning Knob.
Top/Rear: Trigger Switch with Lock-off, Main Handle, Rear Handle.

Operation: To start, press and hold the lock-off button, then squeeze the trigger. Release the trigger to stop the chain. Engage the chain brake by pushing the hand guard forward.

Operation

For cutting logs, pruning branches, and general limbing.

  1. Starting a Cut: Let the chain reach full speed before contacting wood. Use the bumper spike to anchor the saw against the wood.
  2. Basic Cutting: Apply light downward pressure; let the chain do the work. Avoid forcing the saw.
  3. Kickback Prevention: Always grip the saw firmly with both hands. Be aware of the bar's tip. Do not cut with the upper quarter of the bar tip.
  4. Bucking (Cutting Fallen Logs): Support the log properly. Make cuts from the top down. For large logs, make a relief cut on the compression side first.
  5. Limbing (Removing Branches): Work from the base of the tree toward the top. Keep the trunk between you and the chain.

Tip: Plan your cut and escape path before starting. Always cut at waist level or below.

Chain Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety.

  1. Sharpening: Use a round file and file guide. Maintain the factory cutting angle. File all cutters to the same length. Check depth gauges and lower them if necessary.
  2. Tensioning: Check chain tension frequently, especially when new. A properly tensioned chain will snap back when pulled away from the bar but will not sag.
  3. Lubrication: Fill the oil reservoir before each use with high-quality bar and chain oil. Check oil flow by pointing the tip at a light surface and running the saw briefly; a line of oil should appear.
  4. Inspection: Regularly inspect the chain for damaged, cracked, or broken links. Inspect the bar for wear, especially in the groove and on the rails.

WARNING! Always remove the battery before performing any maintenance. A dull chain is dangerous and increases the risk of kickback.

Battery Care & Charging

Use only genuine Ryobi 40V Lithium-ion batteries and chargers.

  1. Charging: Insert battery into charger. Charger LED will indicate status (e.g., red for charging, green for complete). Charge at room temperature.
  2. Storage: Store battery in a cool, dry place away from metal objects. For long-term storage, charge battery to about 50%.
  3. Disposal: Do not dispose of in fire or ordinary trash. Recycle at an authorized Ryobi battery collection site.

CAUTION! Do not charge a damaged or wet battery. Do not expose battery to fire or excessive heat.

Storage

Clean the chainsaw thoroughly after use. Empty the oil tank if storing for an extended period.

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Clean sawdust and debris from the air vents, bar, chain, and housing.
  3. Apply a light coat of oil to the bar and chain to prevent rust.
  4. Store in a dry, secure location out of reach of children.

Tip: Use a scabbard or bar cover for safe storage.
