Safety Information

Read and understand all instructions before operation. Always wear appropriate PPE.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps/pants, and sturdy boots.
  2. Pre-Operation Check: Inspect chainsaw for damage, ensure chain is sharp and properly tensioned, check all fasteners are tight.
  3. Operating Zone: Keep bystanders and pets at least 15 feet away. Be aware of your surroundings.
  4. Kickback Zone: Avoid contact with the upper quarter of the bar tip. Always grip firmly with both hands.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. The chain brake is a safety device; test it before each use.

Assembly & Initial Setup

Most units require minimal assembly. Unpack all parts and inspect for damage.

  1. Attach the Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar onto mounting studs. Loop chain around bar with cutting teeth facing forward on top. Adjust tension.
  2. Fill Fluids: Add proper fuel/oil mix to fuel tank and bar & chain oil to oil tank. Do not mix them.
  3. Check Chain Tension: Chain should be snug against the bar but pull freely by hand. Use tool-less tensioner to adjust.
  4. Final Inspection: Ensure all nuts and covers are secure. Test chain brake function by pushing front hand guard forward.

CAUTION! Use only high-quality, fresh 2-cycle engine oil mixed with unleaded gasoline at a 40:1 or 50:1 ratio (check manual for exact specification).

Specifications

Controls and Components

Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting the engine.

Main Components: Front Hand Guard/Chain Brake, Throttle Trigger, Throttle Trigger Lockout, Stop Switch, Choke Control, Decompression Valve (if equipped), Primer Bulb, Fuel Cap, Oil Cap, Chain Tensioner, Side Cover.

Operation: The throttle trigger lockout must be depressed before the throttle trigger can be squeezed. The chain brake stops the chain when the front hand guard is pushed forward. The stop switch must be in the "RUN" or "I" position to start.

Fuel & Oil

Using the correct fuel and oil is critical for performance and engine life.

  1. Fuel Mix: Use fresh unleaded gasoline (87 octane min.) and a high-quality 2-cycle engine oil designed for air-cooled engines. Mix at the ratio specified in your manual (e.g., 40:1 = 3.2 oz oil per 1 gallon gas).
  2. Mixing: Mix in a clean, approved container. Add oil to gas, then shake thoroughly. Do not mix directly in the chainsaw tank.
  3. Bar & Chain Oil: Use a dedicated chainsaw bar oil for proper lubrication, especially in cold weather. Do not use waste oil.
  4. Storage: Do not store fuel mix for more than 30 days. Use a fuel stabilizer if intended for longer storage.

Tip: Always clean the area around the fuel and oil caps before opening to prevent debris from entering the tanks.

Starting & Operation

Follow these steps for a cold start. For a warm start, omit the choke step.

  1. Place on Ground: Set chainsaw on a flat, clear surface. Grip rear handle with right foot in handle, left hand on front handle. Engage chain brake.
  2. Activate Choke: Move choke lever to FULL CHOKE position. Press primer bulb 5-10 times until fuel is visible.
  3. Start Engine: Pull starter rope briskly 2-3 times until engine 'pops'. Move choke lever to HALF CHOKE. Pull starter rope until engine starts.
  4. Warm Up: Allow engine to run for 10-15 seconds at half throttle. Disengage chain brake by pulling back on front hand guard.
  5. Cutting: Use full throttle when cutting. Let the saw do the work; do not force it. Be mindful of kickback.
  6. Stopping: Release throttle, allow engine to idle, then press the STOP switch to "OFF" or "O".

WARNING! Never drop-start or start the chainsaw above waist height. Always start with the chain brake engaged.

Maintenance Schedule

IntervalTask
Before Each UseCheck chain tension & sharpness; inspect for loose parts; check fuel/oil levels; test chain brake.
Every 5 HoursClean air filter; check spark plug condition.
Every 10 HoursClean cooling fins; check all nuts and bolts.
Every 20 HoursReplace spark plug; clean fuel filter (in tank).
Seasonally/AnnuallyClean/replace air filter; inspect/replace fuel lines; clean carburetor air intake; professional servicing recommended.

CAUTION! Perform all maintenance with the engine off, spark plug wire disconnected, and chain brake engaged.

Chain Sharpening & Replacement

A sharp chain is essential for safe and efficient operation.

  1. Sharpening: Use a round file matching your chain's pitch (e.g., 5/32"). File each cutter at the manufacturer's specified angle (typically 30°). Maintain equal file strokes per cutter. File depth gauges with a flat file.
  2. Replacement: When cutters are worn beyond the wear line or damaged, replace the chain. Ensure new chain matches bar in pitch, gauge, and drive link count.
  3. Bar Maintenance: Regularly clean bar groove and oil holes. Flip the bar periodically for even wear.

Tip: Sharpen the chain frequently (every 1-2 tanks of fuel) for best results. A dull chain requires more force and increases kickback risk.

Storage

Proper storage prevents fuel system issues and corrosion.

  1. Short-Term (under 30 days): Run the engine dry of fuel or add a fuel stabilizer. Store in a dry, locked location out of reach of children.
  2. Long-Term (over 30 days): Drain all fuel from the tank and carburetor. Run engine until it stops. Drain bar & chain oil. Remove chain, clean it and the bar, coat with oil. Store in a dry place.
  3. Safety: Always store the chainsaw with the chain guard on.

CAUTION! Gasoline is highly flammable. Drain fuel in a well-ventilated area away from sparks or flames.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Engine will not startNo spark; flooded engine; old fuel; clogged air filter; choke position incorrectCheck spark plug; wait if flooded; use fresh fuel mix; clean air filter; follow correct starting procedure.
Engine starts then diesClogged fuel filter; dirty carburetor; faulty fuel line; vented fuel capReplace fuel filter; clean carburetor; inspect/replace fuel line; ensure cap vent is clear.
Engine lacks powerDirty air filter; clogged spark arrestor; dull chain; improper fuel mixClean/replace air filter; clean spark arrestor screen; sharpen chain; use correct 40:1/50:1 mix.
Chain does not turnChain brake engaged; clutch worn; drive sprocket damaged; chain too tightDisengage chain brake; inspect clutch/sprocket; adjust chain tension correctly.
Excessive vibrationLoose components; unbalanced chain; damaged bar; worn AV mountsTighten all nuts/bolts; sharpen chain evenly; inspect/replace bar; check anti-vibration mounts.
Chain throws oil or no oilOil port clogged; wrong oil viscosity; oil pump malfunctionClean oil ports; use correct bar oil; check oil pump and lines.

Reset: For electronic ignition models, there is no user reset. Mechanical issues require part replacement.
