Chain ContactKeep hands away from moving chain; engage chain brake when not cutting.
Fuel HandlingRefuel in well-ventilated area with engine off and cool; use approved fuel container.
Electrical HazardsDo not operate near power lines or electrical sources.
Falling BranchesBe aware of overhead hazards; clear work area.

Features & Components

Key components of the Poulan 2900 chainsaw for identification and operation.

  1. Engine: 2.9 cu in (47cc) 2-cycle air-cooled engine.
  2. Guide Bar: 16" or 18" sprocket-nose bar (model dependent).
  3. Chain: .325" pitch, low-kickback safety chain.
  4. Automatic Oiler: Delivers oil to bar and chain during operation.
  5. Anti-Vibration System: Reduces operator fatigue.
  6. Chain Brake: Stops chain instantly if kickback occurs or manually activated.
  7. Throttle Lockout: Prevents accidental throttle engagement.
  8. Decompression Valve: Easier starting.
  9. Front Hand Guard: Protects left hand from debris and chain.

WARNING! Never operate a chainsaw without proper training and protective equipment.

Assembly & Setup

Unpack and assemble your chainsaw following these steps.

  1. Remove all packing materials and inspect for damage.
  2. Attach guide bar: Loosen bar nuts, position bar over studs, align chain with drive sprocket, tension chain, tighten nuts.
  3. Fill oil tank: Use high-quality bar and chain oil.
  4. Fuel mix: Prepare 2-cycle fuel (40:1 gas to oil ratio for most models; check manual).
  5. Check controls: Ensure throttle trigger, lockout, and chain brake function properly.

CAUTION! Ensure chain is properly tensioned—should snap back when pulled from bar.

Controls & Operation

Familiarize yourself with controls before starting the engine.

Controls: Throttle trigger, throttle lockout, choke, primer bulb, stop switch, decompression valve, chain brake lever, front hand guard.

Starting Procedure (Cold Engine):

  1. Place saw on firm, flat surface.
  2. Engage chain brake.
  3. Set stop switch to "ON".
  4. Pull choke to full position.
  5. Press primer bulb 5-6 times.
  6. Pull starter rope sharply until engine fires.
  7. Push choke to half position.
  8. Pull starter rope again until engine starts.
  9. Allow to warm up, then disengage chain brake.

Cutting Techniques: Use lower part of bar; avoid tip; plan escape path; do not cut above shoulder height.

Chain & Bar Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures cutting efficiency and safety.

  1. Chain Sharpening: Use round file and guide; maintain correct filing angle (usually 30°). Sharpen when chips become dust.
  2. Chain Tension: Check frequently when hot and cold. Adjust via side tensioner screw.
  3. Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove; flip bar weekly for even wear; check for wear and straightness.
  4. Sprocket Inspection: Replace worn drive sprocket to prevent chain damage.

Tip: Keep chain sharp; a dull chain increases kickback risk and operator fatigue.

Engine Maintenance

Maintain engine for reliable performance and long life.

  1. Air Filter: Clean after each use; replace if damaged. Do not run with dirty filter.
  2. Spark Plug: Clean and gap to .025" (0.63mm); replace annually or if fouled.
  3. Cylinder Fins: Keep clean for proper cooling.
  4. Carburetor Adjustment: Factory set; only adjust if necessary by qualified technician.
  5. Muffler & Spark Arrestor: Clean screen regularly to prevent carbon buildup.

WARNING! Allow engine to cool before performing any maintenance.

Fuel & Lubrication

Use correct fuels and lubricants to prevent engine damage.

Fuel Mix: Use fresh unleaded gasoline (minimum 89 octane) mixed with high-quality 2-cycle engine oil at 40:1 ratio (3.2 oz oil per 1 gallon gas).

Bar & Chain Oil: Use only specified bar and chain oil for proper lubrication. Check oil level before each use.

Storage: Never store fuel mix longer than 60 days. Use fuel stabilizer for longer storage.

CAUTION! Gasoline is highly flammable. Store in approved container away from heat and sparks.

Storage

Proper storage prevents damage and ensures easy startup.

  1. Clean entire saw of dirt, sawdust, and debris.
  2. Drain fuel tank and run engine until it stops to clear carburetor.
  3. Remove chain, clean, and soak in oil. Store bar coated with oil.
  4. Store in dry, secure location away from children.
  5. Cover to prevent dust accumulation.

CAUTION! Never store with fuel in tank for extended periods.
