Safety Warnings & Precautions

Critical safety information to prevent serious injury or death. Always wear protective equipment and follow operational guidelines.

HazardPrecaution
KickbackHold saw firmly with both hands; use reduced-kickback chain; avoid tip contact.
Chain contactAlways engage chain brake when not cutting; wear cut-resistant chaps and gloves.
Hearing damageWear hearing protection during operation.
Eye injuryAlways use safety glasses or face shield.
Fuel hazardsRefuel in well-ventilated area with engine off and cool; use approved fuel mix.
Electrical linesSurvey work area for overhead or buried power lines before cutting.
Fall hazardsSecure footing; do not operate on ladders or unstable surfaces.
Exhaust fumesOperate only in well-ventilated outdoor areas.
Hot surfacesAvoid contact with muffler and cylinder during/after operation.
Unauthorized useDo not allow untrained persons or children to operate saw.

Features & Components

Key components and functional features of the Pioneer chainsaw.

  1. Engine: 2-stroke gasoline engine with electronic ignition.
  2. Guide Bar: Available in 16", 18", and 20" lengths.
  3. Chain: Low-kickback safety chain with automatic oiling.
  4. Chain Brake: Inertia-activated front hand guard.
  5. Anti-Vibration System: Rubber-mounted handles to reduce fatigue.
  6. Easy-Start: Decompression valve for reduced pulling effort.
  7. Automatic Oiler: Adjustable flow for chain lubrication.
  8. Air Filtration: Dual-stage air filter with quick-release cover.
  9. Controls: Throttle trigger, throttle lockout, choke, stop switch.
  10. Fuel Tank: Capacity: 0.55 US gallons (2.1 liters).

WARNING! Familiarize yourself with all controls and features before operation.

Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and assemble your chainsaw for first use.

  1. Attach guide bar and chain: Place bar on mounting studs, loop chain over sprocket and onto bar groove, adjust tension.
  2. Fill with fuel mix: Use fresh 50:1 gasoline-to-2-cycle oil mixture (89 octane minimum).
  3. Fill chain oil: Use bar and chain oil (not motor oil) in separate oil tank.
  4. Check chain tension: Chain should snap back when pulled from bar; adjust tensioning screw.
  5. Inspect safety equipment: Verify chain brake engages properly; check throttle lockout function.

CAUTION! Never operate with loose chain or without proper lubrication.

Starting & Operation

Proper starting procedure and cutting techniques.

  1. Cold Start: Place on flat ground, engage chain brake, set choke to full, press decompression valve, pull starter cord until engine fires, move choke to half, pull until starts, then disengage choke.
  2. Warm Start: No choke; pull starter cord.
  3. Cutting Position: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, left arm straight, right arm slightly bent.
  4. Basic Cuts: Use lower quadrant of bar for felling; full bar length for bucking.
  5. Kickback Prevention: Maintain firm grip; never cut with tip; be aware of pinch points.
  6. Shut Down: Release throttle, engage chain brake, press stop switch.

Tip: Let engine warm up 30 seconds before applying full throttle.

Maintenance Schedule

Chain & Bar Care

Proper maintenance ensures cutting efficiency and safety.

Sharpening: Use round file matching chain pitch (typically 3/8"). Maintain 30° cutting angle. File all cutters evenly.

Depth Gauge: File rakers to 0.025" below cutter height using depth gauge tool.

Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove weekly; flip bar monthly for even wear; dress bar rails if burred.

Chain Tension: Adjust when chain sags from bar; tension when cool, recheck after warm-up.

Lubrication: Ensure oiler is working; adjust flow for dusty conditions.

Carburetor Adjustment

Three adjustment screws: L (low speed), H (high speed), T (idle).

  1. Warm up engine fully.
  2. Set idle speed (T): Adjust so chain doesn't move but engine runs smoothly.
  3. Adjust L screw: Turn clockwise until engine runs poorly, then counterclockwise 1/4 turn.
  4. Adjust H screw: With throttle fully open, turn clockwise until RPM peaks, then counterclockwise 1/8 turn.
  5. Recheck idle and acceleration.

WARNING! Improper adjustment can cause engine damage. Consult dealer if unsure.

Storage Guidelines

Prepare chainsaw for extended storage.

  1. Drain fuel tank or add fuel stabilizer and run for 5 minutes.
  2. Run carburetor dry by disconnecting fuel line and running until stall.
  3. Remove chain, clean in solvent, coat with oil, store separately.
  4. Clean entire saw, especially cooling fins and air filter area.
  5. Store in dry, cool place, protected from dust and moisture.

CAUTION! Old fuel can damage carburetor; never store with untreated fuel.
