Safety Information & Warnings

Read and understand all instructions before use. Failure to follow warnings can result in serious injury or death.

HazardPrecaution
KickbackAlways hold saw firmly with both hands; use reduced-kickback chain; do not let bar nose contact objects.
Chain BrakeEngage chain brake when starting, carrying, or not actively cutting. Test function before each use.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps/pants, and sturdy boots.
Fuel HandlingRefuel in well-ventilated area with engine off and cool. Use approved fuel/oil mix. No smoking.
Work AreaClear area of tripping hazards. Ensure no persons or animals within 15 feet (5 meters).

WARNING! This is a powerful cutting tool. Never operate when fatigued or under the influence of drugs/alcohol.

Emissions TechnologyMeets stringent emission standards with catalytic converter (where equipped).

Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble guide bar and chain.

  1. Attach guide bar: Remove bar cover nuts, position bar over studs, align chain drive links with sprocket.
  2. Install chain: Place chain over bar, ensuring cutting teeth face forward on top of bar.
  3. Tension chain: Use side tensioner to adjust until chain snaps back when pulled from bar. Tighten bar nuts.
  4. Fill fuel tank: Use STIHL MotoMix or 50:1 mix of 89+ octane gasoline and STIHL HP Ultra oil.
  5. Fill chain oil tank: Use STIHL chain oil or approved biodegradable oil.

CAUTION! Ensure chain brake is engaged during assembly. Wear protective gloves when handling chain.

Controls & Components

Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting.

Main Controls: Front Handle with throttle trigger lockout and throttle trigger; Rear Handle with master control lever (stop switch/choke/run positions); Chain brake lever; Decompression valve button; Fuel primer bulb; Side chain tensioner.

Master Control Lever Positions: - STOP (0): Engine off. - CHOKE (up): For cold starts. - RUN (down): Normal operation.

Chain Brake: Push forward to engage (lock chain); pull back toward rear handle to disengage.

Starting & Stopping Procedure

Always start on clear, level ground with chain brake engaged.

  1. Cold Start: Set master control lever to choke (up). Press decompression valve. Press fuel primer bulb 5-10 times. Place saw on ground, hold rear handle with right foot, pull starter handle sharply until engine fires. Move master control to run (down). Pull starter again to start.
  2. Warm Start: Master control in run position. Pull starter.
  3. Stopping: Release throttle, move master control to STOP (0).

WARNING! Never drop-start or start above waist height. Keep hands clear of chain.

Operation & Cutting Techniques

Use proper stance and grip. Let the saw do the work.

Tip: Maintain full throttle during cutting. Do not force the saw; apply light feed pressure.

Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance ensures performance and longevity.

IntervalTask
Daily/Before UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Inspect for loose fasteners. Clean air filter.
Every 10 HoursClean spark arrestor screen (if equipped). Check fuel filter.
Every 20 HoursReplace air filter. Check spark plug.
Every 50 HoursClean cooling fins. Check anti-vibration elements.
Annually/As NeededReplace fuel filter, spark plug. Have dealer check carburetor adjustment (M-Tronic self-adjusts).

Chain Sharpening & Tensioning

A sharp, properly tensioned chain is essential for safe, efficient cutting.

  1. Tensioning: Loosen bar nuts. Turn side tensioner clockwise until chain is snug against bar bottom. Chain should snap back when pulled. Retighten bar nuts.
  2. Sharpening: Use round file matching chain pitch (e.g., 3/8" file for 3/8" chain). File each cutter at prescribed angle (typically 30°). Maintain equal length on all cutters. File depth gauges with flat file and gauge.

CAUTION! Always wear gloves. Chain must be cool before tensioning. Check tension frequently during first tank of fuel.

Fuel & Lubrication

Use only high-quality, fresh fuel and recommended oils.

WARNING! Never use automotive motor oil, dirty oil, or fuel older than 60 days. Do not mix oils.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Engine will not startNo fuel, flooded, spark plug faulty, brake engagedCheck fuel; set master control to run; dry spark plug; ensure brake disengaged.
Engine runs poorly/diesClogged air filter, old fuel, dirty spark arrestorClean/replace air filter; use fresh fuel; clean spark arrestor screen.
Chain does not turnChain brake engaged, clutch worn, sprocket damagedDisengage chain brake; inspect clutch and sprocket; replace if worn.
Excessive vibrationLoose components, damaged anti-vibration mountsTighten all fasteners; inspect anti-vibration elements.
Chain throws oil but doesn't cutDull chain, incorrect filing, depth gauges too highSharpen chain properly; file depth gauges to correct height.

M-Tronic Reset: If engine runs erratically, let it idle for 3 minutes (no throttle) to allow system to recalibrate.
