The Stihl MS390 is a professional-grade chainsaw featuring a powerful 64.1cc engine, electronic ignition, anti-vibration system, QuickStop® inertia chain brake, STIHL Ematic™ lubrication system, side-access chain tensioner, and a decompression valve for easier starting. This manual covers safety, features, assembly, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and specifications. Always read and understand all safety instructions before use.
Key components: Engine, guide bar, saw chain, chain brake, throttle trigger, master control lever, fuel and oil tanks.
| Feature | Description |
|---|---|
| Engine | 64.1cc, 2-stroke, single cylinder with electronic ignition |
| Anti-Vibration System | Reduces operator fatigue |
| QuickStop® Inertia Chain Brake | Stops chain instantly in kickback situations |
| STIHL Ematic™ System | Efficient chain lubrication, reduces oil consumption |
| Side-Access Chain Tensioner | Easy chain adjustment without tools |
| Decompression Valve | Reduces pulling force for easier starting |
| Master Control Lever | Combines choke, throttle lock, and stop functions |
| Fuel Tank Capacity | Approx. 0.81 US pt (0.38 l) |
| Oil Tank Capacity | Approx. 0.51 US pt (0.24 l) |
| Recommended Guide Bar Lengths | 16" to 20" (40 cm to 50 cm) |
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is mandatory. Unpack and inspect contents.
WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. The chain brake is a safety device; test before each use.
Assemble guide bar and chain, fill with fuel/oil mixture and chain oil.
CAUTION! Chain tension correct when snug against bar but can be pulled around by hand. Re-tension after initial use.
Right Side: Throttle trigger, throttle trigger lockout, master control lever (choke/run/stop), rear handle. Left Side: Chain brake hand guard, side-access chain tensioner, decompression valve (press to engage).
Master Control Lever Positions: - STOP (0): Engine off. - RUN (I): Normal operation. - CHOKE (⏚): Cold start position (pull out).
Chain Brake: Engages automatically by inertia or manually by pushing hand guard forward. Disengage by pulling back towards rear handle.
Cold Start:
Warm Start: Master control lever in RUN (I). Follow steps 4, 7, 8.
Stopping: Release throttle, let engine idle. Push master control lever to STOP (0).
Always use proper grip: right hand on rear handle, left on front. Maintain secure footing.
WARNING! Never operate above shoulder height or with one hand. Be alert for falling branches.
| Interval | Task |
|---|---|
| Before each use | Check chain tension, sharpness, brake function, fuel/oil levels, loose fasteners. |
| Every 5 hours | Clean air filter, check spark plug. |
| Every 20 hours | Clean spark arrestor screen (if equipped), check fuel filter. |
| Every 100 hours | Clean cylinder fins, check anti-vibration elements. |
| Annually/As needed | Replace fuel filter, spark plug, air filter. Professional servicing recommended. |
CAUTION! Perform maintenance only when engine is off and cool. Disconnect spark plug wire for safety.
Proper lubrication is critical. Sharpen chain regularly.
Tip: A sharp chain reduces effort, improves safety, and extends life of all components.
For storage over 30 days:
CAUTION! Never store with fuel in tank for long periods. Fuel can degrade and damage engine.
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
|---|---|---|
| Engine will not start | No spark, flooded, stale fuel, master control lever position | Check spark plug, use fresh fuel, set lever to RUN, follow starting procedure. |
| Engine starts then dies | Clogged air/fuel filter, carburetor adjustment | Clean/replace filters. Have carburetor adjusted by authorized dealer. |
| Loss of power | Dull chain, clogged air filter, spark arrestor screen | Sharpen chain, clean air filter and spark arrestor. |
| Chain does not turn | Chain brake engaged, clutch/sprocket worn, chain too tight | Disengage brake, check clutch and sprocket, adjust chain tension. |
| Excessive vibration | Loose components, damaged anti-vibration mounts, unbalanced chain | Tighten all fasteners, check mounts, sharpen chain evenly. |
| Chain throws oil | Overfilled oil tank, incorrect oil viscosity | Fill to correct level, use recommended oil. |
Service: For repairs beyond basic maintenance, contact an authorized STIHL servicing dealer. Use only STIHL replacement parts.
