Technical Specifications

Assembly & Initial Setup

Unpack and assemble your MS260 chainsaw correctly before first use.

  1. Inspect Contents: Verify all parts are present and undamaged.
  2. Attach Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar on studs, fit chain with cutting teeth facing forward, tension properly.
  3. Fill Fluids: Add proper fuel/oil mix to fuel tank and bar/chain oil to oil tank.
  4. Check Controls: Ensure throttle trigger, throttle lockout, and chain brake function correctly.
  5. Initial Start: Follow cold start procedure in a clear, open area.

CAUTION! Never attempt assembly or adjustments with the engine running. Ensure chain brake is engaged during assembly.

Fuel & Lubrication

Proper fuel and lubrication are critical for performance and engine life.

Fluid TypeSpecificationMixing Ratio
FuelUse unleaded gasoline with minimum 89 octane (RON). Do not use ethanol blends over 10%.Mix with high-quality 2-stroke oil at 50:1 ratio (2% oil).
2-Stroke OilUse Stihl HP Ultra or equivalent JASO FD/ISO-L-EGD certified oil.20 ml oil per 1 liter of gasoline.
Bar & Chain OilUse Stihl chain oil or SAE 30 weight non-detergent motor oil in warm temperatures.Fill oil tank before each use; adjust oiler as needed.

WARNING! Never use straight gasoline or automotive motor oil. Store fuel mix in approved container for no more than 30 days.

Starting & Stopping Procedures

Correct starting and stopping ensures safety and prolongs engine life.

  1. Cold Start:
    • Engage chain brake.
    • Set master control lever to choke position (✱).
    • Press decompression valve (if equipped).
    • Pull starter cord sharply until engine fires.
    • Move master control to half-throttle position (⏼).
    • Pull starter cord again until engine starts.
    • Briefly blip throttle to disengage fast idle.
  2. Warm Start: Set master control to run position (⚙) and pull starter cord.
  3. Stopping: Release throttle, allow engine to idle, then move master control to STOP (0) position.

Important: Always engage chain brake when starting or carrying the saw.

Operation & Cutting Techniques

Proper cutting techniques improve efficiency and safety.

  1. Basic Stance: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, left foot slightly forward.
  2. Grip: Hold front handle with left hand, rear handle with right hand, thumbs wrapped around handles.
  3. Kickback Zone: Avoid cutting with upper quadrant of bar tip.
  4. Felling:
    • Plan escape path at 45° angle from fall direction.
    • Make notch cut (1/3 of tree diameter) on fall side.
    • Make felling cut from opposite side, leaving hinge wood.
  5. Limbing: Cut from trunk outward, supporting limb when possible.
  6. Bucking: Support log properly; cut from top side when log is supported on both ends.

WARNING! Never operate chainsaw above shoulder height or with one hand.

Maintenance Schedule

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety.

IntervalMaintenance Task
Daily/Before UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication; inspect for damage; clean air filter.
WeeklyClean cooling fins; check spark plug condition; inspect anti-vibration elements.
MonthlyClean fuel filter; check fuel lines; inspect clutch and sprocket.
Every 3 MonthsReplace spark plug; clean carburetor air passage; check all nuts and bolts.
AnnuallyReplace fuel filter; clean muffler spark arrestor; professional inspection recommended.
As NeededSharpen chain; replace worn bar; replace damaged parts.

Chain & Bar Care

Proper chain and bar maintenance ensures cutting efficiency and longevity.

  1. Sharpening: Use correct round file size (typically 4.0mm or 4.8mm). Maintain 30° cutting angle and 10° top plate angle. File all cutters to equal length.
  2. Tensioning: Chain should be snug against bar but pull freely. Re-tension when chain sags from bottom of bar.
  3. Bar Maintenance: Regularly clean bar groove; flip bar weekly for even wear; dress bar rails with flat file when burred.
  4. Lubrication: Ensure oiler is working; chain should throw small oil droplets during operation.
  5. Storage: Loosen chain tension; clean and oil bar and chain before storage.

Tip: A sharp chain reduces operator effort and improves safety.
