Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and inspect all components. Assemble on a clean, stable surface.

  1. Attach guide bar and chain: Place bar on studs, loop chain over sprocket and bar, adjust tension via side wheel.
  2. Fill with fuel: Use STIHL MotoMix or 50:1 gasoline/oil mixture (89 octane minimum).
  3. Fill chain oil: Use STIHL chain oil or equivalent; check oiler function.
  4. Check controls: Ensure throttle trigger, throttle lock, and chain brake function properly.

WARNING! Always wear protective gear (gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, chainsaw chaps, and sturdy boots) during assembly and operation.

First-Time Operation

Perform pre-start checks before first use.

  1. Check chain tension: Chain should be snug against bar but pull freely by hand.
  2. Prime fuel system: Press fuel bulb 5-10 times until fuel is visible.
  3. Set master control: Move lever to cold start position (choke).
  4. Start engine: Place on ground, hold front handle with left hand, pull starter rope with right until engine fires.
  5. Warm up: Allow engine to run at idle for 30 seconds before cutting.

CAUTION! Never drop-start or start above waist height. Keep bystanders at least 15 feet away.

Specifications

Controls and Functions

Master Control Lever: Choke/Start/Run/Stop positions. Throttle Trigger: Controls engine speed. Throttle Lock: Must be pressed to engage throttle. Chain Brake Lever: Manual activation; inertia-activated. Decompression Valve: Reduces starting effort. Chain Catcher: Prevents broken chain from striking operator. Muffler: Spark arrestor included.

Starting Procedure: 1. Engage chain brake. 2. Press decompression valve. 3. Set master control to choke. 4. Pull starter until engine fires. 5. Move lever to half-throttle. 6. Pull until engine starts. 7. Blip throttle to disengage fast idle.

Safe Operation Procedures

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear helmet with face shield, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps, and cut-resistant boots.

  1. Clear work area of debris and tripping hazards.
  2. Check for kickback danger zones (upper quadrant of bar tip).
  3. Use proper stance: Feet shoulder-width apart, left hand on front handle, right on rear.
  4. Let chain do the work; avoid forcing the saw.
  5. Shut off engine when carrying more than a few steps or when not in use.

Tip: Plan escape path before cutting. Never cut above shoulder height.

Maintenance Schedule

Daily: Check chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Clean air filter, check for loose fasteners. Weekly: Clean spark arrestor screen, inspect fuel filter, check anti-vibration elements. Monthly: Clean cooling fins, inspect spark plug, check clutch drum and sprocket. Annually: Replace fuel line and filter, clean carburetor (if needed), professional inspection.

WARNING! Always disconnect spark plug wire before performing maintenance. Use only STIHL-approved parts.

Chain Sharpening & Care

Use STIHL filing kit (5/32" round file, file guide, depth gauge tool).

  1. Secure bar in vise.
  2. File cutters at 30° angle, maintaining original shape.
  3. File from inside out, using consistent strokes.
  4. Check depth gauges after every 3-4 sharpenings; file to 0.65 mm (0.025").
  5. Clean bar groove weekly; flip bar monthly for even wear.

CAUTION! Wear gloves when handling chain. Keep chain sharp—dull chains increase kickback risk.

Storage Guidelines

For storage over 30 days: 1. Drain fuel tank and run engine until it stops. 2. Remove spark plug, add 1 tsp of oil to cylinder, pull starter slowly 2-3 times, reinstall plug. 3. Clean entire saw, especially cooling fins and air filter. 4. Loosen chain tension. 5. Store in dry, locked area out of children's reach.

CAUTION! Never store with fuel in tank—fuel deteriorates and can damage carburetor.
