Safety First

Essential safety guidelines to prevent injury during repair and operation.

Safety RuleDescription
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)Always wear safety glasses, gloves, and hearing protection.
Work AreaWork in a well-ventilated, clean, and dry area away from sparks or flames.
Fuel SafetyDrain fuel before repair. No smoking near fuel or fuel vapors.
Disconnect Spark PlugAlways disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any repairs.
Sharp Chain HandlingWear cut-resistant gloves when handling the chain and guide bar.
Secure the SawClamp or secure the chainsaw firmly before disassembly.
Proper ToolsUse the correct tools as specified to avoid damage and injury.
Manual ReferenceConsult this manual for specific torque values and procedures.

Model Identification

Locate your model number to ensure you follow the correct procedures and order the right parts.

  1. Find the model and serial number plate, typically located on the rear housing or crankcase.
  2. Common McCulloch series include: Mac, PM, Pro Mac, and Power Mac.
  3. Refer to the manual's index to find the specific section for your model.

WARNING! Using repair instructions or parts for the wrong model can cause malfunction or unsafe operation.

Tools & Equipment

Recommended tools for effective chainsaw repair.

  1. Standard socket set (metric and SAE)
  2. Screwdrivers (flathead and Phillips)
  3. Feeler gauge set
  4. Spark plug wrench and gap tool
  5. Compression tester
  6. Carburetor adjustment tool
  7. Chain breaker and rivet spinner
  8. Torque wrench

CAUTION! Using improper tools can strip fasteners and damage components.

Specifications

Engine Systems

Overview of major engine components: cylinder, piston, crankshaft, bearings, seals.

Compression Check: Use a compression tester. Reading below 110 PSI indicates worn piston rings, cylinder, or leaking seals.

Cylinder & Piston Inspection: Remove muffler to inspect cylinder walls for scoring. Light scoring can be honed; deep scoring requires replacement.

Crankcase Seals: Leaking seals cause air leaks, leading to poor performance. Test with pressure/vacuum tester.

Fuel System

Components: Fuel tank, lines, filter, carburetor, and primer bulb.

  1. Inspect fuel lines for cracks and replace if brittle.
  2. Clean or replace the in-tank fuel filter.
  3. Carburetor overhaul: Disassemble, clean jets and passages with carb cleaner, replace diaphragm and gasket kit.
  4. Adjustment: Initial settings: L (Low) jet 1-1.5 turns out, H (High) jet 1-1.5 turns out. Fine-tune for smooth acceleration.

Tip: Always use fresh, properly mixed fuel to prevent carburetor issues.

Ignition System

Components: Flywheel, coil, spark plug, stop switch, and wiring.

  1. Check spark: Remove plug, ground it to cylinder, pull starter. Look for strong blue spark.
  2. Air gap: Set coil air gap to 0.010" (0.25mm) using a feeler gauge.
  3. Test coil resistance with multimeter (refer to manual for specific ohms values).
  4. Inspect flywheel key; a sheared key will cause timing issues.
  5. Check all wiring for breaks or shorts.

WARNING! Never pull the starter with the spark plug disconnected and not grounded.

Cutting Assembly

Guide bar, chain, sprocket, and clutch.

  1. Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove and oil holes. Flip bar regularly for even wear.
  2. Chain Sharpening: Use correct round file size. Maintain proper filing angle (typically 30°).
  3. Sprocket Inspection: Replace if worn (teardrop shape on drive links).
  4. Clutch Inspection: Worn clutch shoes or springs cause poor chain engagement.
  5. Chain Tension: Proper tension allows pulling chain by hand with slight resistance.

CAUTION! A dull or damaged chain increases kickback risk and operator fatigue.

Routine Maintenance

Schedule to ensure longevity and safe operation.

Daily/Pre-Use: Check chain tension and sharpness, inspect for loose fasteners, check fuel level and for leaks.

Weekly/Monthly: Clean air filter (foam/washable), clean cooling fins, check spark plug condition, clean guide bar groove.

Seasonal: Replace fuel filter, clean/replace spark arrestor screen in muffler, inspect and replace worn sprocket/clutch.
