Safety Information

Read all instructions before use. Always wear appropriate PPE.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment: Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps, and steel-toe boots.
  2. Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders and pets at least 15 feet away. Ensure secure footing.
  3. Kickback Prevention: Hold saw firmly with both hands. Do not cut with tip of bar. Use reduced-kickback chain.
  4. Electrical Safety: Keep away from power lines. Do not operate in wet conditions.

WARNING! Chainsaws are dangerous. Failure to follow safety rules may result in serious injury or death. Never operate when fatigued or under influence.

Assembly & Preparation

Assemble the chainsaw before first use.

  1. Install Bar and Chain: Place bar over studs, loop chain over sprocket and bar groove, align chain drive links with sprocket, tighten bar nuts finger-tight.
  2. Tension Chain: Use tool-less tensioner wheel to adjust until chain snaps back when pulled from bar. Tighten bar nuts securely.
  3. Fill Oil Tank: Use only high-quality bar and chain oil. Fill reservoir to MAX line.
  4. Install Battery: Insert fully charged 40V XGT battery until it clicks.

CAUTION! Ensure chain is installed with cutting teeth facing forward on top of bar. Incorrect installation can cause kickback.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Main Components: Front handle with chain brake, Rear handle with trigger, Battery port, Oil tank cap, Chain tensioner wheel, Bar and chain.

Controls: Trigger switch with lock-off button, Chain brake lever (front handle), Battery release button, Oil flow adjustment screw (underneath).

Operation: Press lock-off button, then squeeze trigger to start chain. Release trigger to stop chain. Push front handle forward to engage chain brake (emergency stop). Adjust oil flow with screwdriver (clockwise to increase).

Operation Instructions

Proper cutting techniques ensure safety and efficiency.

  1. Starting: Ensure chain brake is disengaged (pulled back toward rear handle). Insert battery. Hold saw firmly, press lock-off, squeeze trigger.
  2. Basic Cutting: Let chain reach full speed before contacting wood. Use middle of bar. Do not force; let chain do the work.
  3. Felling Trees: Plan escape path. Make notch cut on falling side, then back cut. Use wedges if needed.
  4. Limbing: Work from trunk outward. Support limb if possible.
  5. Bucking: Support log off ground. Cut from top down. Beware of pinch points.

Tip: Regularly check chain tension, especially during first few minutes of use as new chain stretches.

Chain Maintenance

Keep chain sharp and properly tensioned for safe, efficient cutting.

  1. Sharpening: Use round file and guide matching chain pitch. File each cutter at same angle (typically 30°). Maintain consistent depth gauge height.
  2. Tensioning: Chain should be snug against bar but pull freely. Re-tension when chain sags (cool chain only).
  3. Lubrication: Check oil level frequently. Adjust oil flow for cutting conditions (more for hard/dry wood).
  4. Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove regularly. Flip bar periodically for even wear.

WARNING! Always disconnect battery before performing maintenance. Wear cut-resistant gloves when handling chain.

Battery & Charging

Use only genuine Makita 40V XGT batteries and chargers.

Charging: Insert battery into charger. LED indicates status (flashing=charging, solid=fully charged). Store batteries in cool, dry place. Do not expose to extreme temperatures.

Battery Safety: Do not short terminals. Do not incinerate. Do not modify. Dispose of properly according to local regulations.

Storage & Transport

Store in dry, secure location out of reach of children.

Storage: Remove battery. Clean saw thoroughly. Apply light oil to bar and chain. Store in case or sheath.

Transport: Engage chain brake. Remove battery or use transport lock if equipped. Use bar sheath.

CAUTION! Never carry chainsaw with finger on trigger. Always use bar sheath during transport.
