Safety Information

Read and understand all instructions before use. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toed boots, and close-fitting clothing.
  2. Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders, children, and pets at least 15 feet away. Ensure secure footing.
  3. Kickback Zone: Avoid contact with the upper quarter of the bar tip. This is the primary kickback danger area.
  4. Chain Brake Test: Test the chain brake functionality before each use by engaging it with the front hand guard.
  5. Battery Safety: Use only John Deere 50V batteries and charger. Do not expose battery to fire, water, or extreme temperatures.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. A chainsaw is a dangerous tool.

Assembly & Initial Setup

Unpack all components and inspect for damage.

  1. Attach the Bar and Chain: Place the chain on the bar, ensuring cutting teeth face forward on top. Align bar with mounting studs and secure with side cover nuts (finger-tight).
  2. Tension the Chain: Use the tool-less tensioning dial to adjust until the chain snaps back lightly when pulled from the bar. Tighten side cover nuts fully.
  3. Fill the Oil Reservoir: Use only high-quality bar and chain oil. Fill reservoir to the marked line.
  4. Install the Battery: Insert the 50V battery into the handle until it clicks securely.
  5. Initial Charge: Fully charge the battery before first use using the provided charger.

CAUTION! Ensure the chain brake is engaged during assembly. Keep hands away from the cutting area.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Main Controls: On/Off Trigger Switch, Safety Trigger Lock, Chain Brake/Hand Guard, Battery Release Button, Oil Filler Cap, Tool-less Tension Dial.

Battery Indicator: Press the button on the battery to illuminate 4 LEDs. 4 lights = 75-100% charge, 1 light = <25% charge.

Operation: To start, press and hold the safety lock trigger with your left hand, then squeeze the main trigger with your right hand. Release the main trigger to stop the chain. Engage the chain brake by pushing the front hand guard forward.

Operation

Proper cutting technique is essential for safety and efficiency.

  1. Starting a Cut: Let the chain reach full speed before contacting wood. Do not "saw" with the tip.
  2. Basic Cutting: Use the lower part of the bar. Let the chain do the work; do not force it.
  3. Bucking (Cutting Logs): Support logs off the ground. Cut from the top down. For pinched bars, stop and use a wedge.
  4. Limbing: Cut limbs from the bottom side of the tree, standing on the opposite side of the trunk.
  5. Kickback Prevention: Maintain a firm grip, stand to the side of the cutting path, and never cut above shoulder height.

Tip: Plan an escape path before each cut in case the tree or limb moves unexpectedly.

Chain Maintenance

A sharp, properly tensioned chain is critical for performance and safety.

  1. Chain Tension Check: Check tension frequently, especially when new. Chain should be snug but pull freely from the bar.
  2. Sharpening: Use a round file and guide matching the chain pitch (5/32"). File each cutter at the original angle. Maintain equal length on all cutters.
  3. Depth Gauge Clearance: File down depth gauges (rakers) with a flat file and gauge tool to maintain proper height.
  4. Bar Maintenance: Clean bar grooves regularly. Flip the bar each time you sharpen to ensure even wear.
  5. Oiling: Check oil level before each use. Adjust oil flow rate via screw near reservoir for heavier/lighter cutting conditions.

WARNING! Always wear heavy gloves when handling the chain. Ensure the battery is removed before performing any maintenance.

Battery & Charging

Use only the John Deere 50V charger (model CH50) with John Deere 50V batteries.

  1. Charging: Plug charger into a standard 120V outlet. Insert battery. Charger light will be red during charging, green when complete.
  2. Storage Charge: For long-term storage (>30 days), charge battery to 50-70% and store in a cool, dry place (50-77°F / 10-25°C).
  3. Battery Life: Typical runtime is 45-60 minutes of intermittent cutting per charge, depending on wood density and user technique.
  4. Disposal: Do not dispose of in household trash. Recycle at an authorized John Deere dealer or battery recycling center.

CAUTION! Do not charge a hot battery. Allow it to cool to room temperature first. Do not puncture or modify the battery.

Storage & Care

Clean the chainsaw after each use and before storage.

  1. Remove the battery.
  2. Wipe down the entire saw with a dry cloth. Clean sawdust from the air vents, bar, and chain.
  3. Empty the oil reservoir if storing for more than one month.
  4. Store the chainsaw and battery in a dry, locked location out of reach of children.
  5. Apply a light coat of oil to the bar and chain to prevent rust.

CAUTION! Never use water or solvents to clean the motor housing or battery. Keep the chain brake mechanism clean and free of debris.
