Safety Information

Operating a chainsaw is inherently dangerous. Always prioritize personal safety and the safety of others.

Safety FeatureDescription
Chain BrakeFront hand guard activates brake to stop chain in kickback situations.
Inertia Chain CatcherPrevents a broken or derailed chain from striking the operator.
Right Hand GuardProtects right hand from contact with the chain.
Throttle LockoutPrevents accidental throttle engagement; must be depressed to use throttle.
Vibration DampeningReduces operator fatigue and long-term injury risk.

WARNING! Always wear appropriate PPE: helmet with face shield/ear defenders, chainsaw chaps, gloves, and steel-toed boots. Never operate when tired or under the influence. Keep bystanders at a safe distance.

Parts & Assembly

Unpack and inspect all components against the packing list.

  1. Handle & Bar Assembly: Attach the guide bar to the saw body, ensuring the chain tensioning pin aligns correctly. Fit the chain with drive links in the bar groove and cutting teeth facing forward.
  2. Chain Tensioning: Use the side-mounted tensioning screw to adjust. Proper tension allows the chain to be pulled around the bar by hand without sagging.
  3. Handle Installation: Secure the rear handle with provided bolts. Ensure all nuts are tightened to specified torque.
  4. Bar Nuts: Tighten bar nuts securely after tension is set.

CAUTION! Do not operate the saw until fully and correctly assembled. Check all fasteners for tightness.

Controls & Features

Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting the engine.

Main Controls: On/Off Switch, Choke Control, Throttle Trigger, Throttle Lockout, Chain Brake Lever (Front Hand Guard), Primer Bulb, Decompression Valve (if equipped).

Features: Automatic Chain Oiler (with manual override), Air Injection Centrifugal Air Cleaning System, Quick-Release Air Filter, Spark Arrestor Muffler, Side-Mounted Chain Tensioner, Combined Stop Switch/Choke Lever.

Technical Specifications

Starting & Operation

Follow the cold start procedure for a new or cold engine.

  1. Pre-Start Check: Ensure chain brake is disengaged (pulled back towards handle). Check chain tension and sharpness. Clear work area.
  2. Cold Start: Activate chain brake. Set master control lever to choke position. Press primer bulb 4-6 times. Pull starter cord until first firing. Move master control to half-throttle position. Pull starter cord again to start. Let engine warm up at idle.
  3. Warm Start: Set master control to run/half-throttle. Pull starter cord.
  4. Cutting: Release chain brake. Apply full throttle before contacting wood. Let the saw do the work; do not force it. Be aware of kickback zone (upper quadrant of bar tip).

WARNING! Never start the saw unless it is on the ground or firmly braced. Keep a firm grip with both hands.

Maintenance Schedule

IntervalTask
Daily / Before UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Inspect for loose nuts/bolts. Clean air filter. Check throttle function and chain brake.
Every 10 HoursClean spark plug. Check fuel filter. Clean cooling fins and cylinder cover.
Every 20 HoursReplace air filter (more often in dusty conditions). Check spark arrester screen.
Every 50 HoursReplace fuel filter. Clean carburetor air intake.
Annually / 100 HoursCheck all vibration dampeners. Replace spark plug. Have carburetor adjustment checked by authorized dealer.

Chain & Bar Care

Proper chain and bar maintenance is critical for performance and safety.

  1. Sharpening: Use correct round file size (typically 4.0mm or 5/32"). Maintain correct filing angle (typically 30°). File all cutters to equal length. File depth gauges (rakers) with a flat file and gauge.
  2. Bar Maintenance: Regularly clean bar groove. Flip the bar weekly for even wear. Dress bar rails with a flat file if burred.
  3. Lubrication: Always use high-quality chainsaw bar & chain oil. Check oil flow by running saw at speed near a light surface; a line of oil should appear.

CAUTION! A dull or poorly maintained chain increases kickback risk and operator fatigue.

Fuel & Lubrication

Using incorrect fuel or oil will damage the engine.

WARNING! Gasoline is highly flammable. No smoking. Mix and refuel outdoors, away from sparks.

Storage Guidelines

Proper storage prevents starting problems and corrosion.

  1. Short-Term (under 30 days): Run the carburetor dry or add fuel stabilizer. Clean the saw thoroughly. Store in a dry, cool place.
  2. Long-Term: Drain all fuel from the tank and carburetor. Remove, clean, and oil the chain. Remove spark plug, add a teaspoon of engine oil into cylinder, pull starter slowly to coat, reinstall plug. Store in original box or protective cover.

CAUTION! Store the saw and fuel out of reach of children and away from open flames or heat sources.

Warranty Information

Husqvarna Forest & Garden Company provides a limited warranty for the Model 61 chainsaw. The warranty period for professional use is typically 90 days from the date of retail purchase. For consumer use, the warranty period is longer (e.g., 1-2 years). Warranty covers defects in material and workmanship under normal use. It does not cover wear parts (chain, bar, spark plug, filters), damage from misuse, neglect, improper maintenance, or use of incorrect fuel/oil. Proof of purchase is required. For warranty service, contact an authorized Husqvarna servicing dealer.
