Assembly & First-Time Setup
Unpacking and preparing the chainsaw for first use.
- Remove all packaging materials and inspect for damage.
- Attach Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar over studs, align chain with drive sprocket and bar groove, tension chain, tighten bar nuts finger-tight.
- Adjust Chain Tension: Lift tip of bar, tighten tensioning screw until chain fits snugly against bar but can be pulled by hand, then tighten bar nuts securely.
- Fill Fuel Tank: Use fresh gasoline mixed with 2-cycle engine oil at 40:1 ratio (see Fuel & Oil section).
- Fill Bar & Chain Oil Tank: Use approved bar and chain oil.
- Check Chain Brake: Ensure brake engages when front hand guard is pushed forward.
WARNING! Never operate without proper chain tension and lubrication. Ensure all fasteners are secure.
Fuel & Oil
Proper fuel mixture and lubrication requirements.
- Fuel: Use fresh unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89. Do not use gasoline containing more than 10% ethanol (E10).
- 2-Cycle Oil: Use high-quality 2-cycle engine oil certified for air-cooled engines (e.g., JASO FD, ISO-L-EGD).
- Mix Ratio: 40:1 (3.2 oz of oil per 1 US gallon of gasoline).
- Mixing: Add oil to approved fuel container, then add gasoline. Close container and shake thoroughly.
- Bar & Chain Oil: Use specially formulated bar and chain oil for all temperatures. In a pinch, SAE 30 motor oil may be used temporarily.
CAUTION! Gasoline is highly flammable. Mix outdoors. Never use automotive motor oil or straight gasoline in the engine.
Starting & Operation
Cold and warm starting procedures and safe operating techniques.
- Pre-Start Check: Ensure chain brake is engaged, area is clear, chain is tensioned and lubricated.
- Cold Start: Set ON/OFF switch to ON. Engage choke. Press primer bulb 5-10 times. Pull starter rope sharply until engine 'pops'. Disengage choke. Pull starter rope again to start.
- Warm Start: Do not use choke. Pull starter rope.
- Operation: Disengage chain brake. Squeeze throttle trigger to increase engine speed before contacting wood. Let saw do the work; do not force. Use appropriate cutting techniques (bucking, limbing).
- Stopping: Release throttle, allow engine to idle, set ON/OFF switch to OFF.
Tip: Always hold saw firmly with both hands, left hand on front handle, right hand on rear handle.
Chain & Bar Maintenance
Routine care for the cutting system.
- Chain Sharpening: Use correct round file size (typically 5/32" or 4.0mm). Maintain correct filing angle (30°-35°). File all cutters to equal length. Check depth gauges and file down if necessary.
- Chain Tension: Check frequently when new; adjust as needed. Chain should be snug but pull freely around bar. Always adjust tension with engine off and cool.
- Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove regularly. Flip bar weekly for even wear. Dress bar rails with a flat file if burred.
- Sprocket: Inspect drive sprocket for wear; replace if teeth are hooked or excessively worn.
- Lubrication: Ensure oiler port on bar is clear. Check oil flow by running saw at high speed near a light-colored surface; look for oil sling.
WARNING! A dull or damaged chain increases kickback risk and operator fatigue. Replace worn chains promptly.
Engine Maintenance
Scheduled maintenance tasks for the 2-stroke engine.
| Component | Interval | Procedure |
| Air Filter | Every 10 hours | Remove, clean with soap/water or compressed air. Replace if torn. |
| Spark Plug | Every 25 hours | Clean electrodes, check gap (0.025 inch / 0.63mm). Replace if worn. |
| Fuel Filter | Every season | Replace in-tank fuel filter. |
| Muffler & Spark Arrestor | Every 25 hours | Remove screen, clean carbon deposits with wire brush. |
| Cylinder Fins | Every 10 hours | Clean debris to prevent overheating. |
| External Cleaning | After each use | Wipe down with damp cloth. Remove sawdust from cooling areas. |
Carburetor Adjustment
Procedure for adjusting idle, low-speed, and high-speed mixture screws (if accessible).
- Initial Settings: Gently turn Low (L) and High (H) screws clockwise until lightly seated, then back out 1-1/4 turns each. Idle (T) screw: back out 1 turn.
- Warm Up: Start engine and run for 5 minutes.
- Idle Speed (T): Adjust so chain does not move with brake disengaged, but engine runs smoothly.
- Low-Speed (L): From idle, quickly squeeze throttle. Engine should accelerate smoothly without hesitation. If it bogs, turn L screw counter-clockwise slightly. If it stumbles, turn clockwise.
- High-Speed (H): With saw held safely (chain not contacting anything), run at full throttle briefly. Listen for a smooth, high-pitched "buzz." A "four-cycling" sound (sputtering) indicates too rich; a very sharp, straining sound indicates too lean. Make small adjustments.
- Final Idle Check: Re-check idle after L and H adjustments.
CAUTION! Improper adjustment can cause engine damage. If unsure, consult a qualified technician. EPA-approved models may have limited-adjustment carburetors.
Storage
Preparing the chainsaw for long-term storage.
- Drain all fuel from tank and carburetor by running engine until it stops.
- Remove spark plug, add 1 teaspoon of 2-cycle oil into cylinder, pull starter rope slowly to distribute oil, reinstall plug.
- Clean entire saw thoroughly, especially air filter and cooling fins.
- Remove chain, clean in solvent, dry, and soak in oil. Clean and oil bar.
- Store in a dry, secure place, out of reach of children.
Tip: Using a fuel stabilizer is not recommended for 2-cycle mix. Always drain for storage over 30 days.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Corrective Action |
| Engine will not start | No spark, flooded, bad fuel, clogged filter | Check spark plug, air filter. Use fresh fuel. Wait if flooded. |
| Engine starts then dies | Clogged fuel filter, carburetor issue, vent | Replace fuel filter. Check tank vent. Clean carburetor. |
| Engine lacks power | Dirty air filter, clogged muffler, bad fuel | Clean air filter and spark arrestor screen. Use fresh fuel. |
| Chain does not turn | Brake engaged, clutch worn, sprocket | Disengage chain brake. Inspect clutch and drive sprocket. |
| Chain throws oil excessively | Oil pump over-adjustment | Adjust oil pump output (if adjustable). |
| Chain gets dull quickly | Cutting dirty wood, hitting ground, poor sharpening | Avoid cutting into dirt. Sharpen correctly. |
| Excessive vibration | Loose components, unbalanced chain | Tighten all fasteners. Check chain for damage. |
Note: For complex repairs (crankshaft, cylinder, connecting rod), take the saw to an authorized Homelite service center.
