Controls & Operation
Familiarize yourself with all controls before starting the engine.
Main Controls: Throttle Trigger, Throttle Lockout (must be depressed to engage throttle), Choke Lever, Stop Switch (ON/OFF), Primer Bulb (on some models), Chain Brake Lever/Hand Guard.
Starting Procedure (Cold Engine):
- Engage chain brake. Place saw on firm ground.
- Set stop switch to ON.
- Set choke to FULL position.
- Press primer bulb (if equipped) until fuel is visible.
- Hold front handle with left hand, place right foot in rear handle. Pull starter cord sharply until engine 'pops'.
- Move choke to HALF position. Pull starter cord again until engine starts.
- Blip throttle to disengage choke. Release chain brake before cutting.
Cutting Techniques: Use lower part of bar for cutting; avoid using the tip to prevent kickback. Let the saw do the work; do not force it.
Chain & Bar Maintenance
Proper chain and bar care is essential for performance and safety.
- Chain Tension: Check frequently when hot and cold. Chain should snap back when pulled from bar but not bind. Adjust via side tension screw.
- Sharpening: Use correct round file size (.325" uses 5/32" file, 3/8" uses 7/32" file). Maintain 30°-35° cutting angle. File all cutters evenly.
- Depth Gauges: File down depth gauges (rakers) with a flat file and gauge to maintain proper height (approx. 0.025" below cutter).
- Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove regularly. Flip bar weekly for even wear. Dress bar rails with a flat file if burred.
- Sprocket: Inspect drive sprocket for wear; replace if teeth are hooked or worn thin.
Tip: A sharp chain reduces operator fatigue and kickback risk.
Engine Maintenance
Regular engine maintenance ensures long life and reliable starts.
- Air Filter: Clean after every 5 hours of use. Tap out debris or wash in soapy water (if foam). Dry thoroughly before reinstalling.
- Spark Plug: Check gap (typically 0.025"). Clean electrode with wire brush. Replace if worn or fouled. Use Champion RCJ-6Y or equivalent.
- Fuel Filter: Replace annually or if clogged. Located inside fuel tank.
- Carburetor Adjustment: Factory set. Only adjust (H, L, idle screws) if necessary and with proper tools.
- Cylinder Fins & Cooling: Keep cooling fins clean to prevent overheating.
- Muffler & Spark Arrestor: Clean spark arrestor screen regularly to prevent carbon buildup and fire hazard.
WARNING! Always disconnect spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.
Fuel & Lubrication
Using the correct fuel and oil is critical for engine life.
- Fuel Mix Ratio: Most XL models: 40:1 (3.2 oz of oil per 1 US gallon of gasoline). Confirm with your manual. Use a measuring cup.
- Gasoline: Fresh, unleaded, 89 octane or higher. Do not use fuel older than 60 days.
- 2-Cycle Oil: High-quality, air-cooled engine oil meeting API TC or JASO FD classification.
- Bar & Chain Oil: Use specially formulated chain oil for high adhesion. In cold weather, use winter-grade oil.
- Never Use: Automotive motor oil, dirty or old gasoline, fuel with more than 10% ethanol for prolonged storage.
CAUTION! Mix fuel in an approved container, not inside the saw's tank.
Storage & Winterization
Proper storage prevents starting problems and corrosion.
- Drain all fuel from the tank and run the engine until it stops to clear the carburetor. OR, add fuel stabilizer to a full tank and run for 5 minutes.
- Remove, clean, and re-oil the air filter.
- Remove spark plug, add a teaspoon of 2-cycle oil into cylinder, pull starter slowly to coat internals, reinstall plug.
- Clean entire saw, especially cooling fins and under clutch cover.
- Loosen chain tension. Store bar and chain coated in oil.
- Store in a dry, cool place, out of reach of children.
