WARNING! Familiarize yourself with all controls before operation.

Maintenance Schedule

Routine maintenance intervals to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

IntervalTask
Before Each UseCheck chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Inspect for loose fasteners. Test chain brake and throttle response.
Every 5 HoursClean air filter. Check spark plug condition and gap.
Every 10 HoursClean cooling fins and muffler area. Inspect fuel filter and line.
Every 20 HoursClean or replace spark arrestor screen. Check carburetor adjustment.
Every 50 HoursReplace fuel filter. Inspect clutch, sprocket, and anti-vibration mounts.
Seasonally or AnnuallyDrain fuel system for storage. Perform complete inspection. Sharpen or replace chain as needed.

Fuel System Service

Procedures for servicing the fuel tank, lines, filter, and carburetor.

  1. Fuel Mixture: Use 89 octane unleaded gasoline mixed with a high-quality 2-cycle oil at a 50:1 ratio.
  2. Fuel Filter Replacement: Disconnect fuel line, remove old filter from tank, install new filter, reconnect line.
  3. Fuel Line Inspection: Check for cracks, brittleness, or leaks. Replace if damaged.
  4. Carburetor Removal: Remove air filter cover and filter. Disconnect throttle linkage and fuel line. Remove mounting nuts.
  5. Carburetor Cleaning: Disassemble, clean jets and passages with compressed air and carburetor cleaner. Do not use wire.

CAUTION! Work in a well-ventilated area. Ensure fuel tank is empty or drained before service.

Ignition System

Testing and servicing the spark plug, ignition coil (CDI), and stop switch.

Chain & Bar Maintenance

Proper care for the guide bar, chain, and drive sprocket.

  1. Chain Tensioning: Loosen bar nuts. Adjust tensioning screw until chain fits snugly against bar but can be pulled by hand. Retighten bar nuts.
  2. Chain Sharpening: Use correct round file size (typically 5/32" or 4.0mm). Maintain 30° cutting angle and 10° top plate angle. File all cutters evenly.
  3. Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove. Flip bar weekly for even wear. Dress bar rails with a flat file if burred.
  4. Sprocket Inspection: Replace drive sprocket if teeth are hooked or worn. Check clutch drum for scoring.
  5. Oil Flow Check: Run saw at high speed pointed at a light surface – a fine line of oil should appear on the chain.

WARNING! Always wear heavy gloves when handling the chain. Ensure chain brake is engaged or spark plug wire is disconnected.

Carburetor Adjustment

Procedure for adjusting the High (H), Low (L), and Idle (T) speed screws.

  1. Initial Settings: Turn H and L screws clockwise until lightly seated, then counterclockwise 1-1/4 turns out.
  2. Warm-up: Start engine and allow to run at idle for several minutes to reach operating temperature.
  3. Idle Speed (T): Adjust so chain does not move and engine runs smoothly. If chain moves, turn T screw counterclockwise slightly.
  4. Low Speed (L): From idle, accelerate quickly. If engine hesitates or dies, turn L screw counterclockwise in 1/8-turn increments until acceleration is crisp.
  5. High Speed (H): With chain brake engaged, run at full throttle. Listen for a smooth, high-pitched "4-stroking" sound (rich). If screaming lean, turn H screw clockwise slightly. Final setting should yield max RPM without leaning out.

CAUTION! Final H screw adjustment affects engine life. Over-leaning can cause immediate engine seizure.
