Safety Warnings & Precautions

Operating a chainsaw is inherently dangerous. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.

HazardPrecaution
KickbackAlways grip saw firmly with both hands. Use a low-kickback chain. Do not saw with the tip.
Contact with chainAlways engage chain brake before starting. Wear protective chaps and gloves.
Hearing damageWear approved hearing protection during operation.
Eye injuryAlways wear safety glasses or a face shield.
Fire/ExplosionRefuel in a well-ventilated area with engine off and cool. Wipe spills immediately.
Carbon MonoxideOperate only in well-ventilated outdoor areas.

Parts Identification & Assembly

Unpack all components and inspect for damage.

  1. Handle Assembly: Attach rear handle to power unit using provided bolts. Tighten securely.
  2. Guide Bar & Chain: Place bar onto mounting studs. Ensure chain direction is correct (cutting teeth forward on top). Adjust tension.
  3. Chain Catcher & Hand Guard: Install safety components as per diagram.
  4. Chain Brake: Test function by pushing forward hand guard towards bar.

WARNING! Do not operate the saw if any part is loose, damaged, or missing.

Fuel & Oil Mixture

The Homelite 330 uses a 2-stroke engine requiring a gasoline and oil mixture.

  1. Fuel: Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with a minimum octane rating of 89.
  2. Oil: Use a high-quality 2-stroke engine oil designed for air-cooled engines.
  3. Mix Ratio: 50:1 (2.6 oz of oil per 1 gallon of gasoline). Mix thoroughly in a approved container.
  4. Chain Oil: Fill separate reservoir with proper bar and chain oil. Do not use waste oil.

CAUTION! Never use automotive motor oil or straight gasoline. This will cause severe engine damage.

Starting & Stopping Procedure

Operation & Cutting Techniques

Access OSD via TV MENU or SETUP (DVD). Front Panel: POWER, OPEN/CLOSE, AUTO/DPMS, MUTE.

Basic Stance: Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, left foot slightly forward. Firm two-handed grip.

Felling: Plan escape path. Make notch cut (1/3 tree diameter), then felling cut. Use wedges if needed.

Limbing & Bucking: Support log off ground. Cut from top side. Beware of pinch points.

Kickback Prevention: Maintain high saw speed in cut. Do not let moving chain contact any object except wood.

Chain & Bar Maintenance

Proper chain condition is vital for safety and performance.

  1. Tension: Check when cold. Chain should snap back when pulled from bar. Adjust tensioning screw.
  2. Sharpening: Use correct round file and guide. Maintain proper filing angle (typically 30°). File all cutters evenly.
  3. Depth Gauges: File down depth gauges (rakers) with flat file to specified clearance.
  4. Bar Care: Clean bar groove regularly. Flip bar each time chain is sharpened to ensure even wear.

Tip: A sharp chain reduces operator fatigue and kickback risk.

Engine Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures reliability.

ComponentIntervalAction
Air FilterEvery 10 hoursClean with soap/water, dry thoroughly. Replace if damaged.
Spark PlugEvery season or 100 hrsClean electrodes, set gap to 0.025". Replace if worn.
Fuel FilterAnnuallyReplace in-tank fuel filter.
Muffler & Spark ArrestorEvery 50 hoursClean carbon deposits from screen.
External SurfacesAfter each useWipe clean of sawdust and debris.

Carburetor Adjustment

Factory settings are optimal. Adjust only if necessary (high altitude, performance issues).

  1. Idle Speed (L): Adjust so chain does not move at idle and engine accelerates smoothly.
  2. High-Speed (H): Adjust for maximum power without 'four-stroking' (sputtering) at no-load.
  3. Low-Speed (LA): Fine-tune for smooth transition from idle to high speed.

WARNING! Excessive leaning of H screw can cause engine overheating and seizure.

Storage Instructions

For storage longer than 30 days:

  1. Drain fuel tank and run engine until it stops to clear carburetor.
  2. Remove spark plug, add 1 tsp of engine oil into cylinder, pull starter slowly 2-3 times, reinstall plug.
  3. Clean entire saw thoroughly.
  4. Remove chain/bar, clean, and coat with oil. Store loosely.
  5. Store in a dry, secure place, out of reach of children.

CAUTION! Storing with fuel can cause gumming of carburetor components.
