Safety Instructions

Always prioritize safety when sharpening chainsaw chains.

  1. Wear safety glasses and cut-resistant gloves during operation.
  2. Ensure chainsaw is completely powered off and disconnected from any power source.
  3. Remove chain from chainsaw or securely clamp guide bar before sharpening.
  4. Work in a well-lit, stable area free from distractions.
  5. Keep fingers away from cutting edges and file during sharpening.

WARNING! Sharpening produces metal filings. Avoid inhalation and contact with eyes. Never attempt to sharpen a chain while it is mounted on a running saw.

Unpacking & Components

Carefully unpack and verify all components are present.

  1. Main filing guide body with angle scale
  2. Round file (specific diameter for your chain)
  3. Mounting clamp with tightening knob
  4. Depth gauge tool and file guide
  5. Instruction manual (this document)

Specifications

Assembly & Setup

Assemble the sharpener before first use.

  1. Identify your chain's pitch and recommended filing angle (check chainsaw manual).
  2. Loosen the angle adjustment knob and set the scale to the desired angle.
  3. Insert the correct diameter round file through the guide holes.
  4. Secure the file with the provided set screws or locking mechanism.
  5. Attach the mounting clamp to the guide bar, ensuring it is snug but not overtightened.
  6. Position the sharpener so the file contacts the first cutter tooth correctly.

Tip: Perform a test stroke on a scrap piece of chain or a less-worn cutter first.

Sharpening Procedure

Follow these steps for consistent, professional results.

  1. Secure the chainsaw bar in a vise or clamp the sharpener onto the bar attached to the saw (power off).
  2. Align the file with the first cutter's top plate at the set angle.
  3. Using smooth, forward strokes, file the cutter 3-5 times. Do not file on the return stroke.
  4. Maintain consistent pressure and follow the natural curve of the cutter.
  5. After sharpening all cutters on one side, reposition the sharpener for the opposite side's cutters.
  6. File all cutters on the second side to the same length and angle.
  7. Use the depth gauge tool to check and file down any raised depth gauges (rakers).
  8. Clean the chain of all metal filings before reinstalling on the saw.

WARNING! Count your strokes and apply equal pressure to each cutter to ensure a balanced chain.

Adjustments & Calibration

Periodically check and adjust your sharpener for accuracy.

Angle Calibration: Verify the angle indicator against a known reference or protractor. Loosen adjustment knob, set precisely, and retighten.

File Alignment: Ensure the file is parallel to the reference marks on the guide. A misaligned file will produce an incorrect hook angle.

Clamp Pressure: The clamp should hold the guide firmly without distorting the guide bar. Over-tightening can damage the bar.

Maintenance & Cleaning

Proper care extends the life of your sharpener.

  1. After each use, brush away all metal filings with a stiff brush.
  2. Wipe down aluminum components with a dry cloth.
  3. Occasionally apply a light machine oil to moving parts and threads to prevent corrosion.
  4. Inspect the file for wear. Replace when it becomes dull or shows significant wear.
  5. Check all screws and knobs for tightness before each use.

CAUTION! Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners on plastic or painted parts.

Storage

Store in a dry, clean environment.

Keep all components together in the provided case or a dedicated toolbox. Store away from moisture to prevent rust on steel files and parts.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Chain cuts unevenly or pullsUneven cutter length or angleRe-sharpen, counting equal strokes per cutter. Verify angle setting is identical for all cutters on both sides.
File does not contact cutterIncorrect file diameter or setupEnsure you are using the file specified for your chain pitch. Check that the sharpener is clamped level on the bar.
Excessive vibration or chatterLoose components or worn fileTighten all knobs and clamps. Replace the file if it is dull.
Difficulty achieving sharp edgeDull file or improper techniqueUse a new, sharp file. Use firm, forward strokes only. Ensure chain is securely held.
Depth gauges too high after sharpeningForgot to file depth gaugesUse the depth gauge tool to check and file down each depth gauge to the recommended height.
Sharpener will not clamp securelyWrong clamp setting or worn partsAdjust the clamp for your bar thickness. Inspect for damage.

Note: A properly sharpened chain should produce small, uniform wood chips, not fine sawdust.
