Parts Identification

Key components of the Chicago Electric 14-Inch Chainsaw.

  1. Front Hand Guard / Chain Brake: Safety feature to stop chain.
  2. Chain Catcher: Helps reduce risk if chain breaks.
  3. Guide Bar: 14-inch Oregon® bar.
  4. Cutting Chain: Low-kickback safety chain.
  5. Bar Cover: Protective cover for storage.
  6. Chain Tensioning Knob: Tool-free adjustment.
  7. Automatic Oiler Port: For chain lubrication.
  8. Oil Filler Cap: Access to oil reservoir.
  9. Rear Handle with Trigger Switch: Main operating handle.
  10. Front Handle: Stabilizing handle.
  11. Power Cord: 3-prong grounded cord.

Assembly & Initial Setup

Unpack all parts. Assembly requires attaching the guide bar and chain, and filling the oil reservoir.

  1. Install Bar & Chain: Loosen tensioning knob. Position chain on bar sprocket and over drive sprocket. Place bar onto mounting studs. Ensure chain direction is correct (cutting edges forward on top of bar).
  2. Tension Chain: Hand-tighten bar nuts. Use tensioning knob to adjust until chain snaps back when pulled from bar. Tighten bar nuts securely.
  3. Fill Oil Reservoir: Use only bar and chain oil. Fill through oil filler cap until full. Replace cap tightly.
  4. Power Connection: Plug into a 120V, 15-amp grounded outlet. Ensure cord is routed safely behind saw.

WARNING! Always wear protective gear. Ensure chain stops moving when trigger is released.

Controls & Operation

Trigger Switch: Located in rear handle. Squeeze to start chain; release to stop.

Safety Lock-Out Button: Must be depressed before trigger can be squeezed.

Chain Brake / Front Hand Guard: If activated forward, it stops the chain. Test before each use.

Operation Steps:

  1. Put on safety gear (glasses, gloves, hearing protection, sturdy boots).
  2. Check chain tension and lubrication.
  3. Place saw on stable surface. Depress safety lock-out, then squeeze trigger to test.
  4. For cutting, use the bottom of the bar to avoid kickback. Let the saw do the work; do not force it.
  5. Release trigger immediately after cut is complete.

CAUTION! Never operate with one hand. Always be aware of kickback zone (upper quadrant of bar tip).

Chain Tensioning & Bar Maintenance

Proper tension is critical for safety and performance. Check tension before each use and after the first few minutes of operation on a new chain.

  1. Check Tension: Unplug saw. Chain should be snug against bar but pull freely by hand.
  2. Adjust Tension: Loosen bar nuts slightly. Turn tensioning knob clockwise to tighten, counter-clockwise to loosen.
  3. Final Check: Tighten bar nuts securely. Chain should not sag from bar.
  4. Bar Maintenance: Regularly clean bar grooves and oil holes. Flip bar periodically for even wear.

Tip: A loose chain can derail; an overtightened chain can damage the bar and motor.

Lubrication & Chain Oiling

The automatic oiler delivers oil to the bar and chain. Manual override may be available on some models.

  1. Oil Type: Use only high-quality bar and chain oil for proper adhesion.
  2. Filling: Unplug saw. Clean area around cap. Fill reservoir completely.
  3. Checking Flow: Hold saw over a piece of scrap wood. Run at full speed for 30 seconds. A line of oil should appear on the wood.
  4. Adjustment: Some models have an adjustable oiler screw near the oil port.

WARNING! Never run the saw without adequate lubrication, as it will quickly damage the bar and chain.

Sharpening the Chain

A sharp chain cuts efficiently and safely. Dull chains require more force and increase kickback risk.

  1. Tools Needed: Round file and file guide matching chain pitch (5/32" is common), flat file for depth gauges.
  2. Secure Bar: Clamp bar in a vise.
  3. File Angle: Maintain manufacturer's angle (typically 30°). Follow existing angle on cutter.
  4. Filing Motion: File from inside to outside in smooth strokes. Apply equal pressure and strokes to each cutter.
  5. Depth Gauges: After several sharpenings, file down depth gauges (rakers) to proper height using a depth gauge tool.

CAUTION! Wear heavy gloves when handling chain. Replace chain if damaged or excessively worn.

Cleaning & Storage

Unplug saw and allow to cool completely before cleaning or storing.

  1. Exterior: Wipe down with a dry cloth. Remove sawdust from air vents, handles, and guard.
  2. Bar & Chain: Clean grooves with a small brush. Apply a light coat of oil to prevent rust.
  3. Storage: Store in a dry, locked location out of reach of children. Use bar cover.
  4. Cord Care: Coil cord loosely. Do not kink or crush.

CAUTION! Do not use compressed air or liquids to clean; moisture can damage electrical components.
