Safety Instructions

Read all instructions before use. Always wear appropriate safety gear.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment: Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, non-slip footwear, and close-fitting clothing.
  2. Work Area Safety: Keep bystanders and pets at least 15 feet away. Ensure secure footing.
  3. Chain Saw Handling: Hold with both hands. Never operate above shoulder height.
  4. Kickback Prevention: Be aware of kickback zone (upper quadrant of bar tip). Use reduced-kickback chain.
  5. Before Starting: Check chain tension, sharpness, and lubrication. Ensure chain brake functions properly.

WARNING! Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death. Keep hands away from moving chain.

Assembly & First-Time Setup

Unpack and inspect all parts. Assemble before first use.

  1. Attach Bar and Chain: Place chain on bar, aligning drive links with bar groove. Mount bar onto saw, ensuring chain fits around sprocket. Tighten bar nuts hand-tight.
  2. Tension Chain: Use tool-free tensioning knob to adjust chain until it snaps back when pulled from bar. Tighten bar nuts securely.
  3. Fill Oil Reservoir: Use only bar and chain oil. Fill reservoir to marked level.
  4. Install Battery: Insert fully charged 40V MAX battery until it clicks into place.
  5. Test Safety Features: Verify chain brake engages when hand guard is pushed forward.

CAUTION! Do not operate with loose chain or empty oil reservoir.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Main controls located on top and rear handle.

Front/Top: Hand guard/chain brake, bar and chain, oil filler cap, tensioning knob, bar nuts.

Rear Handle: Trigger switch, lock-off button, battery release button, battery fuel gauge.

Operation: Press lock-off button, then squeeze trigger to start chain. Release trigger to stop chain. Push hand guard forward to engage chain brake.

Operation Guide

Proper cutting techniques ensure safety and efficiency.

  1. Starting Cut: Apply chain to wood at full speed. Let chain do the work; avoid forcing.
  2. Bucking (Cutting Logs): Support log off ground. Cut from top down. For large logs, cut from top, then roll and cut from bottom.
  3. Limbing (Removing Branches): Cut branches from bottom of tree working toward top. Keep trunk between you and chain.
  4. Pruning: Make undercut first, then top cut to prevent bark tearing.
  5. Kickback Awareness: Never let bar tip contact wood, metal, or other objects.

Tip: Plan escape path before cutting. Never cut while on ladder or unstable surface.

Chain Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety.

  1. Chain Tensioning: Check before each use. Chain should be snug against bar but pull freely. Adjust with tensioning knob when chain is cool.
  2. Sharpening: Use round file (5/32 inch) and file guide. Maintain 30-degree cutting angle. Sharpen when chain produces fine dust instead of chips.
  3. Lubrication: Check oil level frequently. Use only bar and chain oil. Clean oil ports if clogged.
  4. Bar Maintenance: Flip bar periodically for even wear. Clean bar groove and oil holes.
  5. Chain Replacement: Replace when cutters are worn to 0.25 inch or damaged. Use only Oregon 91PX series chain.

WARNING! Always disconnect battery before performing maintenance.

Battery Care & Charging

Proper battery handling extends life and performance.

  1. Charging: Use only Black Decker 40V MAX charger. Charge at room temperature. LED indicates charging status.
  2. Storage: Store battery at 50% charge in cool, dry place. Do not store in chainsaw.
  3. Temperature: Operate between 32°F and 104°F. Do not charge below 40°F or above 104°F.
  4. Disposal: Do not incinerate. Recycle at authorized center.

CAUTION! Do not expose battery to water or fire. Do not disassemble.

Storage

Store properly to prevent damage and corrosion.

  1. Clean chainsaw thoroughly, removing sawdust and debris.
  2. Apply light oil to bar and chain to prevent rust.
  3. Remove battery and store separately.
  4. Store in dry, secure location out of children's reach.
  5. Use scabbard or bar guard when not in use.

Tip: Store with chain tension slightly loosened.
