Safety Instructions

Read all instructions before operation. Always wear protective gear.

  1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Wear safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, chainsaw chaps, and steel-toed boots.
  2. Work Area Safety: Clear area of obstacles, ensure secure footing, keep bystanders away.
  3. Chain Brake: Test before each use. Understand kickback dangers and proper handling.
  4. Fuel Safety: Mix fuel outdoors, away from sparks. Use correct oil/gasoline ratio (e.g., 50:1).

WARNING! Chainsaw kickback can cause severe injury. Always hold saw firmly with both hands. Never operate above shoulder height.

Assembly & Preparation

Unpack and inspect contents. Assemble guide bar and chain.

  1. Attach Guide Bar: Place bar onto studs, align chain tensioning pin, install nuts finger-tight.
  2. Install Saw Chain: Ensure cutting teeth face forward on top of bar. Fit chain into bar groove and around sprocket.
  3. Tension Chain: Use tensioning screw to adjust. Chain should snap back when pulled from bar.
  4. Fill Tanks: Add mixed fuel to fuel tank. Fill bar/chain oil tank with recommended oil.

CAUTION! Ensure chain brake is disengaged during assembly. Chain must be properly tensioned to prevent derailment.

Specifications

Controls and Components

Main Controls: Throttle trigger, throttle trigger lockout, choke control, master control lever (stop switch), chain brake lever, decompression valve.

Components: Front handle with chain brake, rear handle, fuel tank cap, oil tank cap, spark plug, air filter cover, muffler, chain catcher, anti-vibration elements.

Operation: Master control lever positions: Start (choke), Run, Stop. Chain brake engaged by hand guard or inertia. Throttle lockout must be depressed to activate throttle.

Starting & Operation

Cold Start Procedure (on ground):

  1. Engage chain brake. Set master control lever to Start (choke).
  2. Press decompression valve (if equipped).
  3. Place saw on firm ground, hold rear handle with right foot.
  4. Pull starter rope sharply until engine fires (1-3 pulls).
  5. Move master control lever to Run. Pull starter rope to start.
  6. Briefly blip throttle to disengage fast idle.

Cutting Techniques: Use lower quadrant of bar to avoid kickback. Let saw do the work; do not force. Plan escape path from falling tree or limb.

Chain & Bar Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures optimal performance and safety.

  1. Chain Sharpening: Use round file and guide. Maintain correct filing angle (typically 30°). File all cutters evenly.
  2. Chain Tension: Check frequently when hot and cold. Adjust tensioning screw. Chain should not sag from bar.
  3. Bar Maintenance: Clean bar groove. Flip bar periodically for even wear. Check for wear and straightness.
  4. Oiler: Check oil output. Adjust oil flow screw if necessary. Ensure oil holes are clear.

WARNING! Always wear gloves when handling chain. Ensure engine is off and cool before maintenance.

Engine Maintenance

Air Filter: Clean regularly with soapy water or compressed air. Replace if damaged.

Spark Plug: Clean and check gap (0.020 inches). Replace annually or if worn.

Fuel Filter: Replace yearly or if clogged.

Muffler: Remove and clean spark arrestor screen periodically.

CAUTION! Use only Stihl-approved parts and lubricants. Dispose of waste oil properly.

Storage & Transport

Long-Term Storage:

  1. Drain fuel tank and run engine until it stops to clear carburetor.
  2. Remove chain, clean, and store in oil.
  3. Clean entire saw, especially cooling fins and air filter.
  4. Store in dry, secure place, with bar and chain separately.

Transport: Always engage chain brake. Use scabbard on guide bar. Secure in vehicle to prevent movement.
